Day One: London

Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 embarked on their exciting journey to London, UK. After two very long flights, with a quick swap in Singapore, the students arrived at Heathrow airport ready for their first day of adventure!

After a check-in at the stunning hotel in Kensington, the students braved their first journey on the Underground Tube towards Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Although cold, London blessed us with some beautiful sunshine weather. On the way, they passed St Paul’s beautiful Cathedral for some photo opportunities.

At the Shakespeare Globe, a very knowledgeable private guide named Rosanna took the students back in time and explained what it would be like to attend ‘The Theatre’ during Shakespeare’s time. One pence would allow you entry to the lowest class position, standing on the floor in front of the stage made of mud and hazelnut shells. She explained stories such as how they created live sound effects and gunfire in the roof of the stage. One story included how once, when the canon was fired from the balcony, a spark hit the thatched roof and a roar of fire took off around the roof and the audience cheered delightfully, thinking it was another amazing special effect! Soon after, they realised it was not and all had to escape the theatre after the roof continued to burn. Thankfully, even in those times, everyone made it out safely. Now a days, the interesting thatched roof is fitted with sprinklers and covered in moss to ensure the theatre meets regulations. To witness the history of the venue was a real treat for the students.

The next stop: Pineapple Studios for a Complicité Theatre workshop. Although the students were beginning to feel tired, they found the energy to impress the company member. Learning about Complicité’s initial creative process and partaking in a range of individual and ensemble movement exercises to train the body to become strong, but fluid.

By now, the city had become quite busy, (and dark in the afternoon) and it was time to head back to the hotel for some pizza dinner at a nearby restaurant before retiring to bed.
