Day Six: The Royal Court

Today there was some time for some sightseeing around Trafalgar Square in the morning before heading to the shops in Covent Garden.

The next stop was the Royal Court Theatre in Sloane Square for a backstage tour. Each of the theatre spaces share a rare vermillion wall in the building and we couldn’t resist taking a group shot! The students were taken around the intricate building exploring the various levels and hidden nooks. The renovating architect had kept traces of the past building visible, with the modern built on top and around the existing space.

The students saw a contemporary work called ‘Midnight Movie,’ which explored the deceptive reality of your digital self versus what is real life, and the conflict between the two. The works performed at the Royal Court are original plays that challenge and provoke the audience. They demand that the audience empathise with the characters. The lives and experiences of the characters are relatable to the modern audience.

After the matinee show, the students enjoyed some Christmas light festivities on their walk to the glamorous department store Harrods to enjoy the luxury ‘window’ shopping. Nearby in Hyde Park, there was a beautiful Winter Wonderland with market food stalls, shops and rides. The students enjoyed some free time with friends before heading back to the hotel to pack their bags. Tomorrow: Shakespeare’s Birth Place!
